Ayurvedic Eating : A Seasonal Conversation Over Food

india.jpg

In this 3 hour course, we will explore how food impacts our well being. Using the Ayurvedic Principles of the 6 Tastes, we will learn how spices in a meal effect digestion and flavor.

Together we will learn about the palate through the Ayurvedic Lens. This includes a deep discussion of the 6 flavors of life. We will sample each flavor and discuss how too much or too little flavor impacts health and diet in general. We will then eat and drink a simple lunch fit for the fall and speak about how the meal has been adjusted to support the qualities present in these months. The combination of this experience, along with discussion, will illuminate how we can review and change our food choices (from diet, to time of day, to spices, and food groups) during other months of the year and stages in our lives.

The workshop will be hands on. You will be provided a handout and recipe preparation. There will be plenty of time as well for questions.

The dedicated history and faith Thailand carries is a perfect compliment to inspire the kind of exploration intended by this program.

My hope for those involved is that after this course, the Yoga will have a deeper sense of “settling” inside of each student so that it begins to express as an emanation from within, like a soft, but strong wind. It might present in the form of teaching yoga, or personal practice, or just as a means of walking through the world. Is This My Ego?! Ayurvedic Exploration of Identity

DSC_2047.jpg

We are all searching for that "perfect balance." We ask our friends what they do and we try and implement those behaviors. We get advice from health coaches, nutritionists, our wise parents, and still no matter what we do, adjust, tweak, still change feels impossible to maintain!

Why is this? Often our struggles have more to do with when we are trying to implement them more than what we are attempting to implement. Ayurveda is a rhythmic practice. It rests its palms on patterns, usually guided by the natural cycles of our gorgeous planet. Learning to understand and predict these cycles is the most effective way to implement change. Time, place, and circumstance are strong influencers and their pressure upon our personal constitutions must be embraced. In this workshop we will explore Ayurvedic theory and practical tools to make changes and move forward into the new year with grace.

In this workshop, we will explore what makes up an Ayurvedic Constitution. We will learn and apply the terms Dosha, Original Nature, Imbalanced Nature, as well as the 5 elements that combine to form all of these.

Often the Ego is perceived as something to be squashed and eliminated. However, through Yoga and Ayurveda we learn that a healthy, well loved, and supported Ego leads us to understanding who we are and what we contribute to the world. In this workshop we will explore the make up of our consciousness as presented by the breath-taking system of Samkhya. We will learn the various parts of the yogic mind, how they function independently and together and how to learn to manage and support them. If the goals of Yoga are quieting the turnings of the mind, it seems important to know then, what it is the mind is, so that we can then quiet their turnings!

We will begin with a practice from 2-3pm and lecture from 3-4pm.

Understanding what the Ego is and how to assist its service will inevitably allow us to make different, more connected choices in our lives. The asana practice will permit us the ability to immediately apply these lessons gleaned from the lecture.

Cost : $45 early registrations, $50 at the door.

Advancing Your Asana - 6 Week Series

Koundanyasana I Smile.jpg

So many of us dream of floating into headstands with ease, of lightly lifting off our toes to balance like a scale in handstand, to bravely tip sideways into a clean side crow posture. During scheduled classes however, there is rarely enough time to breakdown and workshop these asanas. Thus, in this 6 week series, we will do this very thing.

Every class will begin with a fluid warm up to prepare the body for the necessary mechanics to come. From here we will learn and develop the necessary tools to arm balance, invert, and move into more complex standing balances.

Each week we will focus on a different aspect. Week 1 & 4 : Arm Balances ; Week 2 &5 : Inversions ; Week 3 & 6 : Standing Balances

This workshop is open to all levels, but it is recommended that you are able to practice and sustain an aligned chatturunga dandasana for 3-5 breaths. For those who are able to balance already, I will offer you more complex asana variations on those you already know and love. There is something for everyone, guaranteed.

See you on the mat!

Ayurvedic Health : The Dance of Balance (a Rasa Lila)

DSC_2060.jpg

Especially in this climate of tremendous information, we hear often about Balance and Health, about finding Balance, and about finding Health. And yet, somehow the practice and the process remains mysterious. Practices and choices that work miracles for one person, have no effect, or even ill effect on another.

Why is this?

Though the words Health and Balance seem static, the experience of Health and Balance are actually anything but. These terms and experiences are relative in their equilibrium and thus, there is nuance behind the certain literacy needed to navigate them.

In this 5 hour immersion we will use the practice of Ayurveda and Yoga to explore what are the delightful parts that make up what we perceive as Dynamic Health - both in the Body, in the Mind, in the Spirit, and in the Environment.

This program is a wonderful match for all Practitioners of Yoga as well as those that have been exploring the intricacies of Wellness.

We will cover :

  • Vayu and Asana and Massage as Therapy
  • Sattva, Rajas, Tamas
  • 20 Gunas
  • 5 Elements Theory
  • 3 Dosha
  • Time, Place, and Circumstance
  • Recognizing Energetic Expression in Food, Environment, and Activity (including Movement and Communication)
  • Using the Element and Guna Practice to Make Choices to Support Current State of Health and/or Achieve Desired State of Health

Vayu Mechanics

Ardha Titibhasana Bakasana 3:4.jpg

We all know that Asanas are effective in creating strength, flexibility, and that unique peaceful feeling in the mind. Often however, we do not know the science behind why this occurs. In this workshop, we will explore (physically) and then discuss (via lecture) the Energy Channels of the Body (Nadis) and how Prana interacts with and is controlled by Physical and Mental Posture Variation so as to create this special experience during Practice.

We will begin with a 2h yoga asana practice complete with a full 15 minute savasana (!!) and after a short break, reconvene for a conversation of how the mechanics of prana influence both the body and mind.

You will leave feeling refreshed, excited, and with a deeper ability to connect and direct the energies that make you tic!

Cost is $55 Pre-registered ; $60 at the door.

Taking the "D" out of Dosha. An Ayurvedic Exploration of Constitution & Balance

IMG_7322.jpg

As Ayurveda increases in popularity, Dosha has become a viral word, often misused and misunderstood. Though the word itself means “that which vitiates,” it has come to be synonymous with Constitution - the opposite of Vitiation!

In this workshop, we will take a comprehensive look at what makes up Dosha - how to understand if we are Living in Balance or Living in Dosha.

We will cover the 5 elements, 20 gunas, and explore how each combine to form varieties of what we know as simply Vata, Pitta, & Kapha. From here we can discuss our own Constitutions and understand why we often go out of balance in the same way(s).

This workshop will teach you how to effectively SEE Ayurveda. From this vantage point of “vidya,” you will be able to discern what foods, activities, conversations, and self-care techniques are useful in particular circumstances.

No medicine is forever, no activity always works, but if we can understand the Nature of Change - which is the Nature of Dosha - we can certainly learn to be supportive, predictive, and healthy.

Free Monthly Wellness Gathering

download.jpg

Wellness can be such a mystery and changing habits can be surprisingly difficult. However, Community is the best way to hold up a promise to yourself.

The idea behind this monthly gathering is to create a community around wellness and change. Together we can discuss ask questions relevant to these topics using the Ayurvedic Lens as a means to support. (All topics are open, but some can revolve around cooking techniques, recipes, how to make time for cooking (!!), how old can food be before it is TOO OLD, self-care, oils, exercise, oils, dieting etc. etc.)

Together we will hold each other up, make wellness a joy, share stories and experiences, and learn to see health as a do able activity.

I will act as a facilitator for your queries. If Ayurveda is new to you, if the word is strange...Come Anyway!

Pranayama : Learn to Control and Free the Breath

We always hear breath is the foundation of the practice and yet we are rarely offered the opportunity to build the foundation of breath in a fundamental way. Until now....!

In this 3 hour workshop we will learn what Pranayama means and how it relates to the practice of both Yoga as a whole and Asana as its part. We will learn what prana is and how it is different from breath and air as well as the various types of pranayama and what these techniques are for.

The workshop will be equal parts experiential as lecture and you will leave enlightened and inspired.

Pranayama need not feel like some heavy thing we "MUST DO" but rather as a technique in and of itself that can lead to higher states of appreciation and participation with life itself.

This is wonderful for beginner practitioners as well as those who are seasoned and also who are teaching.

Topics will include :

- Brimhana/Langhana

- Prana vs. Air vs. Breath

- 5 Vayus

- Nadi Therapies (Chikitsa)

- Kumbakas (Retentions) + Bandhas

- Pranayama + Kosha (Body "sheeth" theory)

- How Pranayama relates to Sympathetic Nervous System vs. Parasympathetic Nervous System vs. Homeostatis

- Variety of Breath practices and how to combine them with each other as well as asanas

- How to adapt breath practices for specific goals of balance and harmony

Advanced Asana Practice at Smiling Dog Yoga - San Luis Obispo, CA

Ekapada Bakasana.jpg

The way postures can be built and sequenced together is an art in and of itself. All asanas belong to specific families. Complex asanas are made of simpler postures belonging to one of these particular families. The ability to understand how families unite creates wild opportunity for creativity and energetic experience.

In this workshop we will go over how "basic" or foundational postures can compound to become complex. We will also explore how transitions between postures can add to this incredibly playful, focused, and heightened experience.

This workshop is opened to all, but recommended for those who feel comfortable in a vinyasa class.

* Please note this course has been approved by Yoga Alliance for Continuing Education credits.

We will begin class with a Lecture from 1-3pm and after a short break, apply our learnings to the asana practice fro 3:30-5pm, supported by a long, nourishing savasana. Understanding what the Ego is and how to assist its service will inevitably allow us to make different, more connected choices in our lives. The asana practice will permit us the ability to immediately apply these lessons gleaned from the lecture.

This workshop is open to all. The asana practice will be suited to all ages, bodies, and strengths. Existing yoga instructors earn Yoga Alliance Continuing Education credits.

Pricing: $90 Full 2 Part Workshop, $50 Drop-In (SDY Members & Staff receive 10% off)

About our Host City :

Chiang Mai is an intimate town nestled in the riches of Northern Thailand. It is surrounded by fertile hills and golden temples with perches awaiting Garuda's clasp.

I always feel that deeper understanding makes the ground both feel firmer and more fecund.

Unique, Complete and Universal : the Experience of Ha-tha Yoga ; Philadelphia PA

Often we add and subtract what we like from the Ha-tha Yoga program to match the paradigm of our lives and needs. However, it is likely, that that which we are editing is already built into the practice without our awareness.

Yoga has manifested to assist us with the joys and burdens of life incarnated and is built to support us, likely without necessary complication. We complicated yoga because our lives are complicated, but this will rarely serve our needs to move into greater simplicity and understanding of the world.

This is the goal of this immersive day at Palo Santo Wellness in Philadelphia. We will learn how to use completely Vedic Technique to create a balanced asana class - one that connects 4 of the 7 Koshas together, that controls Vayu and manipulates the Nadi to create an experience that is deep, gradual and life changing.

The afternoon will begin with a full 2h asana class, exploring these techniques as a practioner. After which we will move into a full lecture and discussion as to what these things are and how and why they work. We will study Sankhya, Vayus, Nadis, Prana, and Kosha.

KAvya of Ha-tha and Vinyasa Yoga ; the Poetry of Flow

  • Northern Liberties Philadelphia, PA, 19123 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS
IMG_2373.JPG

Yoga like Poetry seems cool and simple upon the surface, but with a stronger understanding, there are depths and depths, riches, beneath.

This is the goal of the Immersion in Philadelphia. We will learn how to use completely Vedic Technique to create a balanced asana class - one that uses what is offered in the Bhagavad Gita, Yoga Sutras, Samkhya, and Ayurveda to align our Koshas, control the Vayu and manipulates the Nadi and Chakras in relation to time, place, and circumstance in order to create an experience that is deep, gradual and life changing.

Especially after teaching and studying in Chiang Mai, i am more clear than ever the profoundness of this information - it offers such a beautiful means to yogic catharsis, and is able to melange the teachings which are often taught as concepts into an active practice that is truly wholesome, therapeutic, and engaging.

Please consider joining this training - build your practice around the balance of Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas, controlling the Vayu, for the sake of balancing Ha-Tha.

I have also elected to offer partial participation and a fantastic discount for teachers. Please see below for more information :

Part 1 : Foundations of the Subtle.

Philosophy :

During this time together, we will delve into the vital themes presented in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Philosophy of Samkhya. We will look to see how engaging with the wisdom offered, will direct us into a more balanced Yoga Practice, one that manages the inherent relationship between Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. We will learn these subjects and explore. And we will chant the Bhagavad Gita so we can truly begin to touch on the Song of God.

Subtle Body Mechanics :

From here we will move into depth of the Subtle Body and explore the way our innate internal anatomy affects our being. We will look into how we can interact with the systems of the Vayus, the Maha Gunas, 20 Gunas, 5 Elements, as well as the Koshal Planes in order to increase perception, dexterity of choice, and overall sense of well-being.

Effects of Mantra :

We will complete Part 1 with an exploration of Mantra, and how Shabda, sound, allows us to integrate with ourselves from this original internal level.

Part 2 : Merging with the Subtle through Sequencing

Sequencing for Class or Personal Practice :

In this final section, we will discuss, analyze, and specify more complex and creative sequencing - built for a clear purpose beyond "peak pose."

Pranayamas effect on the Kosha, Vayus, and Overall Practice :

We will study and practice pranayama in order to discern how its structure actively influences the practice, both in asana and out.

Ayurveda as a means to Affect Practice :

We will study the introduction to Ayurveda and understand how environment, choice, time, and circumstance affect the intention and direction of a practice. We will learn why a group class must be different than a private, why a class at 6am requires a different focus than a 6pm class - even if the postures are the same etc.

The Art of Touch :

Finally, we will go more thoroughly into adjustments built precisely for the variety of body types, ages, and skill levels we encounter in the shala.

Throughout the Sequencing Aspect of this Immersion, we will look to discern methods of interweaving the aspects presented in Part 1 into the physicality of a Yoga Class in order so to create a Personal Practice or an Open Level Class that permeates beyond than the realms of the physical body, in order to touch the soft eternality of the Spirit.

My hope for those involved is that after this course, the Yoga will have a deeper sense of “settling” inside of each student so that it begins to express as an emanation from within, like a soft, but strong wind. It might present in the form of teaching yoga, or personal practice, or just as a means of walking through the world. I always feel that deeper understanding makes the ground both feel firmer and more fecund.

I would like to keep this training intimate, located in Philadelphia at a Beautiful Private Residence.

Dates : April 2-17 with a day off after every 6 days together.

Hours : 8am-3:30pm, with a one hour lunch break. We will get right to nitty-gritty, with a group practice daily. Those who participate will leave feeling refined, refreshed, and inspired.

Cost : $2000 with a $500 non-refundable deposit to secure space.

Early Bird Rate : $1800 if deposit is paid by Dec 15, 2015.

Partial Participation and Teacher's Discount : I would like to open this training up to partial participation - 3 days, 5 days, and 1 week of the 2 - as well as a supreme discount for those already teaching yoga. If you are interested in this discount - $500 off the original price, please send me a letter of intent, describing the whys of your yoga, your teaching.
